This article is for the total beginner and all newbies.

Having a website is basically like owning a piece of land. With any piece of land that gets a high footfall you can make money from it by putting up a billboard.

And that’s it. Super simple.

So AdSense is a program owned by Google.

Companies pay Google to show their ads.

Google then pays websites to allow them to put AdSense on their website.

Google takes 32% of that money leaving you with a hefty 68%.

Good deal eh?

Well they won’t just let anyone in, as the online world is now so saturated and every man and his dog has a website. (no quite literally – see the top ten pet websites)

Your site has to be unique, original and genuine.

How is the pay calculated?

This is done in a couple of ways. It can either be by CPC or RPM.

CPC = Cost Per Click

This is what it says on the tin. You get paid a set amount every time one of your website users clicks on the ad on your page.

RPM = Revenue Per Mille (Mille is latin for thousand)

Slightly different, it is the amount of money you get paid per thousand views your website gets.

The theory behind this way of making money comes down to your site being unique, it MUST stand out, it MUST be original and it MUST be genuine.

As I have mentioned before on this site, users are not stupid. It is EASY to tell when something is not true to it’s core and with so much content out there it is ever more important to make sure yours sticks out for good reasons.

Types of content to monetize

These are well known examples but ones that need to be mentioned none the less.

Android apps – Android is a branch of Google so of course, it is simple to generate AdSense income off a simple app. This is why flappy bird made so much money, not because of app purchases or because it was an amazing app, it had people hooked and as mentioned at the start, where there is great footfall there is great money to be made with advertising.

Blog articles – This is the main type of content that people think of when they think of AdSense. With proper SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and relevant topical content, this can be a great way to generate income.

Video – If your preferred media type is video then that is fine as well. YouTube is also owned by Google and they have the YouTube affiliate programme. This is where they play an ad at the start or during your video and you get paid for views that the video gets, a little bit like CPC.

Ts and Cs

As with everything these days there are strict terms and conditions that come with AdSense, as Google is such a big company they will have no issue with striking you off their AdSense list leaving you out of pocket forever!

Make sure to read the terms and conditions for you country as there are localised specifics.

The basics are that the website should not be promoting or containing anything illegal.

The second is that you are NOT allowed to click your own ads (… darn, I know I know)

When to apply for AdSense?

The main focus for your site, as I have said before, is to make the content unique and of the best quality you can achieve.

If you have been typing away for well over a year and everything on the site is owned/generated by you then it is probably worth a shot.

In the event that Google doesn’t think you are up to par. When they let you down lightly with an email they will give you a few pointers as to how to improve your site so it will be accepted.

There is, however, no limit on the amount of times that you can apply to have AdSense on your site.

How to apply for AdSense?

You literally Google it and funnily enough it will be the first thing that is at the top of the search results.

No more needs to be said on that point as it really is self explanatory.

In review:

  • AdSense is like a billboard for your website.
  • You either get paid per advert click OR per thousand views your website has
  • Create your own quality content, with whatever media you wish,  for at least a year then you should be good to go. It is not worth trying to jump the gun.
  • Your content has to be the best it can be. It has to be genuine.

Thanks for giving this article a read, I hope it has given you an insight as to the basics of AdSense.

Any comments of whatever nature are welcome,

Stay tuned, big things are coming x
